Beanee Weenees and John the Baptist

Nothing says Jesus Loves You like a can of beanee weenees!

After learning & reading more in depth about Mary, the mother of Jesus last week and getting so much encouragement from her joyful trust in God’s promises, I decided to keep reading further in the Book of Luke. As you would expect, there’s more great examples of how we are to live our lives for the Lord.

~~~~~
This week I find myself thinking a lot about John the Baptist, Jesus’ cousin. Luke 3 gives the account of when John became ‘John the Baptist’.
“… the word of the Lord came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness. And he went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sin.”
There is so much we can learn from the life & message of John.
♥ All people need to hear the message of Christ – include those who think they know it all already
♥ At our very core we exist to worship & proclaim Christ; compared with Him nothing else really matters – not the clothes on our back, the comfort of a bed, or our next meal. Yet often that’s where spend our time and resources, am I right?
♥ When Christ is preached, it draws repentance and persecution that may cost us everything.
Like John the Baptist, Christians are called to prepare the way of the Lord. I don’t think it’s necessary that we eat locusts & honey or live in the desert, however his life exemplifies one that is sold out and dedicated to telling people about the Savior. Is yours?
John the Baptist gave up his comforts and called Jews and Gentiles to do the same. He said to those coming to be baptized “repent from your wicked ways… bear fruit that is worthy of repentance.”
They asked, “What shall we do then?”
~~~~~
Allow me to interrupt myself to say that John’s answer was an AHA moment for me, which of course stands for All Holy Answers!
♥ Did John tell this brood that in order to bear fruit they must put on their best fashions and get their butts to the pews on Sunday morning?
♥ Did he tell them to spend all their time indulging their children’s every whim?
♥ Did he say you are a child of the King of Kings, you are entitled to the best life has to offer!?
♥ Did he ask them to hoard their wealth, so that they could live comfortable lives while waiting for the Savior’s coming?
NO!!!!!
~~~~~
Get this – John the Baptist told them to GIVE. G.I.V.E. GIVE!
John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”
Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”
“Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them.
Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”
He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay.”
John told them to give up (turn from their wicked ways) and give away (share to the point of sacrifice)
♥Can I say something without offending you?
No. I’m pretty sure this is going to offend you.♥
We American Christians seem to have this view that if we give a can of Beanee Weenees at the door of the Christian concert that costs $40 a ticket, that we’re dutiful Christians. For real?
Not that I think weenees are sinful (well, sometimes), but my point is it’s NOT enough! That can of beanee weenees did not set you back, now did it? Nope.
I think John’s message was give sacrificially, give til it actually costs you something, give til it hurts! Then, THEN you will have compassion, then you will bear fruit that is worth noticing and will bring others to repentance before Christ also ‘that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven’
Perhaps I’m preaching to the choir – I realize that many of you do live in a way that bears fruit. I’m often humbled by how generous you are to the needs we present for the kids in Swaziland, Africa.
I also realize that nearly all of us live on tight budgets. A few years ago, hubby and I decided to live below our means. A long story that I’ll spare you all the details of. Basically it started with us selling our big, beautiful home and over a year later buying a small home that was less than half our previous mortgage costs. The process felt so liberating that not too long after we traded in two large vehicles for a sedan! In gasoline alone, we saved some serious money.
Looking back, I thank God – we really didn’t know what we were doing to be honest – but I’m thankful the Lord knew the ups & downs that were ahead of us. Had we continued to try to live the American Dream (that says bigger is better) we would’ve found ourselves high & dry. But even now with incomes that are significantly less, we are able to give a larger percentage of our time & resources to people & causes that we believe are close to the Father’s heart. Not that I would mind having more resources again, but I hope we would continue to increase sacrificial giving that furthers God’s kingdom instead of our own.
So my AHA moment was the fact that John’s central message of repentance revolved around giving things up and giving yourself away so that others may live & glorify God.
I can attest to the fact that sacrificial giving hasn’t been easy, but it has created in us a greater dependency on the Lord for our provision. We have been drawn closer to His people and to His heart. Even now, we are trusting God for specific needs for our family, that only God can fulfill. In reality, there’s no where else I’d rather be, even if it hurts in the moment.
Like John the Baptist, we the Church are called to prepare the way of the Lord, to be His Voice, His Heart, and His Hands! I ask that today you reflect on what that means in your own life.  Go ahead, give your Beanee Weenees at the door and feel good about it! But can you bear a greater reflection of your Savior by being more generous with the poor & needy locally and across the world? Are there comforts and indulgences you can give up in order that godly fruit may grow?
Shine On!
This post is not meant to be a call for another fundraising project, but I can’t talk about giving without sharing an opportunity to do so. Word to Your Mother
This post has nothing to do with V-ice, but can I help that he coined the phrase 'Word to your mother' ever so eloquently???
Recently Pastor Jason Pence slapped me right in the face!
well…
his sermon slapped me
I mean…
the Holy Spirit convicted me through his sermon.
Convicted. Challenged. Slapped. You get the idea.
In short, his message was about the mother of all mothers. Mary. The poor, uneducated teenager who, upon learning that she was preggers, was like, ‘cool – whatever you say, Lord’.
Hold up – If Jesus even asks me to sacrifice a few days (okay, hours) without food, my first reaction is ‘get thee behind me, Satan! This can’t be God! I must have nourishment’ (yes, snickers & Pepsi count as nourishment, thank you very much)!
But not Mary. The Bible records that yes, she was greatly troubled/petrified/scared to death, but not once does she whine, complain, or try to get out of it. In fact she instantly began to worship the Lord in acceptance of His plan, no matter the personal, temporal cost. It’s my belief that she had been fervently seeking His plan long before the angel of the Lord appeared to her.
In the face of public humiliation, she focused on God’s plan.
At the potential of losing everything including her fiance, her family, her very life she praises the Lord saying, “For He who is mighty has done great things for me and holy is His name!”
What did Mary have that I don’t?
Trust.
I’m convinced that she was able to immediately accept God’s will for her (and all the pain that came with it) because she loved the Lord more than anything or anyone and had learned how to hear His voice above all the other voices that told her this was coo-coo crazy.
Three truths Pastor JP presented:
1. God uses people who desire to do His will. Seriously ask yourself what you desire to do the most.
2. God uses people who decide to pay the cost. There is a cost. What are you willing to give up to be used by God? Approval of man? Your comfortable life? Your money & time? Are you willing to risk it all?
3. God uses people who dare to trust His promises! How much do you trust God? Enough that you can praise Him when He calls you to do seemingly crazy things like give birth to His Son? Well, that role is already taken, so no worries there!
Let me encourage you to pause today, lean in close to hear the whisper of your Heavenly Father calling you to know & trust His voice above the world’s fearful chatter.
Typically, God’s plan doesn’t lead you down Earthly Easy Street, but remember God’s plan is higher than your plan. {in other words, God is smarter than you!} The rewards for obeying & following His voice are eternal. Yeah, like, Forrrrevverrrrr! That’s why Paul says we are to fix our eyes not on what is seen, but what is unseen. We serve an eternal God and though we may suffer earthly trials, it pales in comparison to basking in his forever glory & riches.
I pray for you today, readers, that you would know your Heavenly Father’s great love for you.Because once you have experienced His unfathomable and undeserved love, a desire will awaken your heart to know, serve & risk it all for this gracious God who has redeemed your soul!
I urge you not to settle for the comfortable life or the so-called American dream of success & happiness. Life is about so much more than pretty decorations, political parties, fashionable shoes, counting calories, and being a ‘good person’!!!! Those things leave us empty and were never meant to fulfill God’s people.
As my mother often says, God didn’t call us to a soft life. (If you need examples, look to the heroes of faith in Hebrews 11.) There will be many trials to overcome and many blessings to share. He has blessed us not so we can be comfortable and self-pleasing children, but that we can give more and live the great adventure He has mapped out for us! Just like Mary, your adventure holds many ups & downs but the good news is that He goes with you through each twist & turn and HE HAS ALREADY OVERCOME it all!!!
So I ask you, do you desire for God to use you to further His redemption story in the lives of others the way Mary did? Take a step of faith, surrender your plan, your time and resources and seek Him for the next step…
Then strap on your big girl boots and dig in your heels because God is about to take you on the ride of your life!
Shine On!
THE BIG DEAL!
Today is Cyber Monday. The internet’s version of Black Friday.
This just screams Christmas, doesn't it?
I’m willing to bet your morning inbox is filled with subject lines like this:
—>ONE DAY ONLY: Save 65% on a Burnt Chocolate Candle your Grandma will pretend to love
—>CLEARANCE!!! Imported handmade by a 6 year old in India knit scarf specially priced at $42.50
—>FREE SHIPPING!!! Don’t miss anyone on your list – Bulk order gifts to stuff everyone’s stockings!!!*
wowzer.
what.a.deal.
You can ask anyone who knows me, I love a good deal! I love the feeling that I’m getting something for nothing, especially at Christmastime. In fact there’s an adrenaline rush that goes along with it. Perhaps that’s why we Americans go ga-ga for 3a.m. Black Friday sales & Cyber Monday extravaganzas… we love getting a deal even more than we love giving the gift!
I found a deal even better than all of this – the deal of the millennium!
You can give a gift that will be forgotten before New Year’s or…
You have the chance to change a child’s life forever!
Use Cyber Monday to Change the Story for a child in Swaziland, Africa and do it in honor of one of your family members!
Instead of spending $$$ to give Grandma the sweet smell of burnt chocolate, give her a gift that gives life. Spend the $$$ HERE, then write Grandma a festive note saying her Christmas gift is extra special this year, it’s bringing life & education to orphaned and at-risk children in Swaziland!**
All joking aside, if we as Christians truly believe Jesus is the Reason for the Season, if we truly believe heaven is for real, and that we are the Body of Christ here on earth, we will ACT on those eternal truths, we will GIVE as Christ has commanded… and we’ll do it with JOY!!!!
Learn to do right; Take up the cause of the fatherless
“Then those ‘sheep’ are going to say, ‘Master, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry and feed you, thirsty and give you a drink? And when did we ever see you sick or in prison and come to you?’ Then the King will say, ‘I’m telling the solemn truth: Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me—you did it to me.’
“Then he will turn to the ‘goats,’ the ones on his left, and say, ‘Get out, worthless goats! You’re good for nothing but the fires of hell. And why? Because
   I was hungry and you gave me no meal,
   I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,
   I was homeless and you gave me no bed,
   I was shivering and you gave me no clothes,
   Sick and in prison, and you never visited.’ Matthew 25:37-40
Do you see Jesus in her eyes?
“Don’t hoard treasure down here where it gets eaten by moths and corroded by rust or—worse!—stolen by burglars. Stockpile treasure in heaven, where it’s safe from moth and rust and burglars. It’s obvious, isn’t it? The place where your treasure is, is the place you will most want to be, and end up being. Matthew 6:20-21
As you will read if you click HERE, as a family, we are each giving up one Christmas present this year and instead putting that money to better, eternal use by participating in Change Their Story. As much as I want my children to love the holiday season, I don’t want them to love the greedy, commercialized version. Giving up one Christmas gift so that a child across the world can have a better life seems like a great way to celebrate Jesus’ birthday! I challenge you & your family to do the same – to Give it UP! You may be surprised how willing they are to put Christ back into Christmas!
Shine On!!!!
Danielle
You Are The Weakest Link
You ARE the weakest link!
There’s been very few times in my life that I’ve been more aware of how weak I am.
I can’t say I ever walk around uber-confident or super close to God… but the past few weeks, faced with people & situations that seem beyond ‘fixable’ I am more acutely aware of how frail I am.
I find myself wanting to run away from the daily struggles that remind me of my frailty; to escape the magnifying glass of challenges, mistakes and failures…
I see my husband’s heart for orphaned and at-risk children, and join him in his desire to do more, to give our plans, our lives to answer the call of Isaiah 1:17, “Learn to do right, seek justice; Defend the oppressed, take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.”
We’re both sick of life as usual and spending our time doing things that don’t have eternal significance. Yet the doors just haven’t opened for us to give our full-time attention to it so we sit with this desire for ‘more’, trying to be content where we are and faithful at our current jobs. Waiting is not our speciality.
The expanse between where we are and where we want to be seems too wide and too deep. The battle between reality & desire rages on and it has taken a toll on all of our relationships. It’s in these battles that I want to retreat and RUN for comfort and peace anywhere I can find it… usually into the arms of Facebook and chocolate.
Then I see my ten year old son, who was diagnosed with a form of autism called Aspergers Syndrome (AS), being left out & bullied at school because he’s weird and literally doesn’t know how to be a friend. Our family of four often walks on pins & needles not knowing when or where the chaos of AS will explode. I long to protect him not just from others, but from himself.
I’ve put off getting him the help he needs outside of school for several reasons, but mostly because I’ve been in denial & not willing to invest money I don’t have for the tools of therapy and other things he needs. I think to get him the help he truly needs, it will take every ounce of my time & strength and that there will be nothing left of me.
Someone slap me!  How selfish!
I seriously don’t think anyone can understand unless they have a child with special needs, how heartbreaking & lonely it can be for the entire family as they discover how to adapt and live so their child can learn and thrive.
I guess I just poured out my guts to you because I want to be vulnerable and stop denying that I am too weak to handle life’s curve balls. Don’t you ever get sick of pretending you’re okay?
The past three days especially, I’ve wanted to r.u.n. But unlike the days before, I’ve r.a.n. to Jesus. I’ve been crying out, “God!!!! I suck!!!!! I can’t get it together!!!!” (I think God likes it when we talk to Him as a friend, and not try to impress Him with religious vocabulary.) And do you know what God says? Well, nothing audible at this point, but I’ve been drawn more to the Word – to read His love letters to me
…to rest in Him
…to seek Him (not His plan)
…to fall in love with Him again (and not settle for phony fixes).
He’s reminding me that I am supposed to be weak. When I’m weak and I run TO Him, He takes that weakness, that humility that says “I can’t do it without You, God” and He infuses His peace, His comfort, and His strength to get through what life brings. This is what I want my husband and sons to see – Christ’s strength working through my weak hands & faint heart to pour His love through to them and others.
So instead of running away & hiding our weaknesses, lets all step back and realize God isn’t keeping score on how well we hold it all together. He’s waiting (with open arms) for us to run to Him, acknowledging our brokenness, surrendering our definition of strength, and trust Him for the journey and the outcome.
Has life gotten messy & confusing for you too? Are you waiting for a door of opportunity to open? Where do you run to when you are at your weakest?
Help Haiti NOW!
Nearly two years ago a 7.0 earthquake rocked the Haitian world – all eyes turned to Haiti to grieve, to comfort, to aid in recovery. You couldn’t go anywhere without seeing the heartbreaking images of children being trapped, starving, dying. The American and world media swarmed to report the devastation, destruction, and despair for months after the quake. Call it what you will, but thanks to the media coverage we heard the stories, saw the images and many, many people were moved to pray and act.
But as with all natural disasters, there came a time when our attention turned elsewhere.
Will you fight for them?
Just yesterday I learned of yet another another disaster in Haiti that has continued to go on after the quake. The predators didn’t stop. The schemes of evil, money-hungry men only grew in the aftermath. Their target?
The most hungry Haitians.
The most needy Haitians.
The most vulnerable Haitians.
The orphaned Haitian children who have already lost everything.
They have cloaked themselves behind what was once a safe haven for the children to find shelter and food at the Son of God Orphanage.
This has to be stopped. An investigation started over 15 months ago and there is now more than enough evidence to catch these predators and REMOVE the children from danger. What can we do? PRAY & ACT!!! We need media coverage that will shine a light on the abuse, sex trafficking, starvation and even organ harvesting.
Please read  Tom Davis’ blog HERE for more details on how you can HELP HAITI NOW!
then.. SIGN THE PETITION HERE!!!
10,000 signatures are needed – so far, there’s 325. Lets begin to END the hell the children are in today!!!!!
What else can we do?
Repost on your blog, on Facebook, and retweet with the hashtags #cnnfreedom and #not_for_sale
This is an opportunity to be a LIGHT to the world in darkness!!!!
Reality Bites.
So many emotions linger.
I want to inspire.
I want to motivate.
I want to scream.
There’s a sense of responsibility I feel – the need to report back to our friends, family & online community – I’m an upbeat person, so I’ve chosen to outwardly focus on the positives of what we just experienced in Swaziland.
"Let the little children come unto Me"
I don’t want to tell you…
… that I met a child who is 11 years old, who’s mother died just a few months ago. This young lady is one of the oldest of 10 children at the homestead, caring for each other, trying to survive.  There is an ‘aunt’ that lives next door who wants nothing to do with the children. During the visit, our team members left a bag of food & supplies. The children took it into their hut – a good indicator that the aunt is not cooking nor caring for them. Thank God for Bheveni Carepoint, where there is consistent food, water, and love, and allows for the children to all stay together as a family unit.
… how at a different carepoint we visited, the children were much more street smart than the Bheveni kids who live far from the city. The fact is, being street smart is probably what protects them from the dangers that surround them. I was shocked by how aggressive some of the children were to get our attention & love and seemed to have no boundaries. I’m embarrassed to tell you that I was even angered when two of the street smart teens refused the dresses I held up for them but instead made it clear they wanted other dresses that they liked better. I was blown away, but the fact is that they are used to having to fend for themselves, used to protecting what they have before someone steals it, and used to fighting for survival. They weren’t ungrateful as I presumed, they just saw something they liked better and didn’t mind expressing their opinion. I was ashamed of the anger that welled up in me. How could I be angry when chances are they’ve not been taught or given gifts without strings attached?
… I also don’t want to tell you that in spite of the beautiful smiles & bright eyes, the Bheveni children are desperate. They are hurting, yet they smile. Just like my own children, they want to know they are loved and individually special to someone. I ache knowing many of the Bheveni kids go to bed at night without a momma’s hug & kiss. They need advocates that stand with them and say Jesus has not forgotten you. You matter! You are loved! You can grow up and beat the odds of a disease-ravaged country and I’m gonna help you do it!
… we have a young child at Bheveni who’s arm was burned due to a fight between his mother and step-mother. Taking her anger out on the child, one of them through scaulding hot water on him.
… another child who is new to Bheveni had a tooth abscess. Though the tooth itself was removed some time ago, the infection in her gumline has caused extreme swelling of one side of her face & lips. She was in a lot of pain and yet tolerating it because she thought she had no resources to fix it. I found out about her because she wrote a letter to her future sponsor saying, “We are the originals not the copies, God is great, He is so wonderful, nothing is impossible, with God all things are possible.” I had to talk with this young lady who had such great faith. It was then I found out about the toothache and infection. We gave her an antibiotic and one of the in-country staff members will be taking her to the doctor in the city today to see what can be done. I am praying for her, and ask that you do as well.
So these are things I haven’t wanted to share. Why? Because it hurts. Because I don’t really know how to cope with it. Honestly, I feel like I’ve been a mess since I returned from Swaziland, with all these issues and more weighing heavily on my heart & mind.
I also fear that when I share these stories, you will think we are trying to guilt you out of your money & shock you into helping. So I’ve held back and tried to process quietly. It hasn’t worked (ask my family)!  Truth is, your help is needed. Sure there are great things going on at Bheveni Carepoint, children are being helped and loved on, but the need is massive.
Stop right there.
What I am NOT saying:
1. Not saying we need a bunch of Americans with good American Christian ideas & programs to rush to Swaziland to try to rescue the children.
2. Not saying that the children aren’t being cared for. They are. AIM staff and volunteers are doing all they can with the resources they have to make sure the children not only have their basic survival needs met, but also are discipled every week and encouraged to trust the Lord when it seems their world is falling apart.
3. And finally, I’m not saying that you need to STOP supporting other, more local missions. For some reason, when we start talking about desperate needs in Africa people wanna use the excuse, “Well, there’s plenty to do right here in our own backyard.” Yep. There is. And we’re doing it. We are not called to local missions or global missions. We Christ-like Christians are called to BOTH. Not encouraged. Called.
Acts 1:8 says, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Your family and neighbors are your Jerusalem. Your state and country are your Judea and Samaria. Swaziland is, for us, our ends of the earth. The country has done nothing to help its growing population of nearly 200,000 orphans due to the spread of HIV/AIDS. There is no foster care, state run orphanages, allowed adoptions, or even free education for the children of Swaziland. Pardon me for screaming, but WHAT IN THE HELL ARE ALL THESE CHILDREN SUPPOSED TO DO WHEN THEIR PARENTS DIE???
Well, that’s where two great organizations step in that are coming to the children in their communities with safe havens called Carepoints. Adventures in Missions and Children’s HopeChest have sought the Lord and partnered together with the native Swazi people that are doing effective work to first & foremost get thousands of orphaned and at-risk children fed everyday. But the vision hasn’t stopped at just feeding the children. The carepoints, including Bheveni, serve the children holistically – body, soul, and spirit. Through AIM & HopeChest’s support as well as the daily diligence of native Swazis such as the bomake (cooks) and the discipleship team, the children are fed, cared for, taught about Jesus, and know where to come when their world starts to fall apart. This is a vision I can get behind. This is a vision I love. This is a vision I will shout about til I can shout no more. Why? Because there is so much that can still be done. Awareness is needed. Education is needed. Funding is needed. Sponsors & advocates are needed. Needed because it’s working!!!! I’ve seen with my own eyes that what we’ve already done is working!
Future goals of these ministries are to make the communities self-sustaining. We don’t want to create dependency. The Swazi’s deserve their dignity, and often what they need is just an opportunity to learn, to have the right tools, to brighten their own future and improve their communities.
It truly starts with one child at a time. That is done through sponsorship. Bheveni Carepoint has about 60 children that need new sponsors (I like advocate better), out of 160 kids. It’s $34 to a friend to a child, to give them a hand-up, and encourage their hearts that they are not alone!!! $34, writing a few letters and praying for the child.
Going forward, we need even more workers with heart, servants with courage, and Americans who will sacrifice a few comforts of time & resources to continue the vision of seeing a nation of Swazi children given every opportunity to be who God created them to be!
In 2012 our #1 goal is 100% sponsorship. All profiled kids (appx. 140 of the 160)  kids will have an advocate and friend by the end of 2012.
Join us in helping to change their reality. Be a Bheveni Advocate. Be a part of changing your world – even to the ends of the earth!
Stay tuned as we share pictures & stories of the 60 children who need a friend.
Par-TAY at Bheveni
We have had a fabulous three days at Bheveni Carepoint. The children are amazing, so well behaved thanks to the daily influence of the bomake & D-Team members Xolani and Cynthia. Not only are they respectful, but they are filled with joy and love to play!
Today that’s what we did – simply play!!! well, if you count face painting, bouncing in a jumper, eating ice cream for the first time, playing soccer, and dancing as playing! :)
My husband Mike has summed up today’s events very well on his blog – go check it out!
MEBrower.com
There is one particular story & photo I would like to share. AIM owns a bounce house that they take around to all the carepoints once a year or so. Today it was at Bheveni for our Fun Day! For some reason I just HAD to bounce. Xolani said I could, so I hopped right in & bounced for a few minutes.
It was so much fun to be up close & experience the giggles with the other children bouncing with me. A few minutes later I told the bomake & bogogo how much fun it was and asked if they would like to jump with me. Only one took me up on it… the oldest gogo (grandmother), Gogo Duduzile stood up and said, “ME!” She and I had so much fun, I didn’t want it to end. I’m pretty sure she didn’t know what she was getting into when she said yes, but we had a blast. It’s a moment I will treasure forever – to see her let go of everything and just PLAY!!!
Jumping for JOY!!!
So whatever you are doing today remember that if GoGo Duduzile can let go of her cares and worries, you can find a way also… perhaps you need a bounce house of your own???
Shine On!
ps… there’s lots of photos from today on Mike’s blog!
Pray for Carepoint Caregivers
Our Bheveni Children
Today please pray for those who live in Swaziland  ~ daily giving of their time, hearts & lives for the sake of the children of Swaziland.
BoMake – these women arrive to the carepoint early in the morning to begin the fire, so they can cook porridge (like cream of wheat) for about 40 preschoolers. Shortly after this meal, Make Gcebile sings songs and teaches the children basic English reading & writing. Later in the afternoon, the bomake begin cooking up the afternoon meal of pap (like mashed potatoes and rice) and beans for the 150+ children who will be arriving soon. It’s a full day’s work. Every day. And they are volunteers.
D-Team – the discipleship team are a group of young adult Swazis who are in love with Jesus, and are invested in seeing the children of Swaziland set free from poverty and lack. They visit all the carepoints, teaching the children about the Lord, praying with them, and are available for lifeskills training as well as counseling should the children need it. They are anointed of the Lord and are a vital part of bringing the children hope & love.
AIM Staff – Adventures in Missions staff & volunteers are the ones who organize over 20 carepoints and profile all the children so that they can hopefully find a sponsor family who will pray for and write letters of encouragement to that specific child. They also see to it that the children celebrate a Christmas/Birthday party every year.  To find out more about AIM, check out their website Adventures in Missions.
Pray for God’s Children
Let the little children come to Me
Our team has the privilege of spending this week with some amazing Swazi children. As most of you know, for over  a year now our social network community has been prayerfully and actively supporting the Bheveni Carepoint in Manzini, Swaziland.
Every day over 150 children come for food, clean water, to learn about Jesus and to have a safe place to play – where they can just be kids! They live within the reality of a county with the highest rate of HIV/AIDS anywhere in the world. For a Swazi child, this means danger & death is a continual part of life, one that can often be lonely and scary. It is not uncommon to see small children as young as 3 or 4 wandering the busy streets.  The carepoint provides a safe haven for them to be children and to be loved.
It’s become a passion of ours to give the children the tools they need to not only survive, but thrive, knowing that through Jesus hope is found for each of them, and their future can be filled with hope & promise.
This week we are spending time with and loving on the Bheveni kids as well as 172 kids at Mangwaneni Carepoint, a carepoint that is located next door to the Manzini city dump. Before the carepoint was established the children would often be found rummaging through the dump in order to find food to fill their tummies, or something they could sell to buy food or pay for school. {just typing it makes me angry} Needless to say, the carepoint at Mangwaneni has been a Godsend, but the children need to FEEL Jesus’ hands & arms around them. I pray that we can be ambassadors of His love.
Today please pray:
  • Ask the Lord to uphold the children’s spirits that they would not lose hope, but instead cling to Him.
  • Pray that God would help us communicate His unfailing love not only through the words we speak, but through our actions to those who desperately need someone to put their arms around them and JUST love them.
  • Please pray for health & protection for the children of Swaziland, that this would be the generation that breaks free from the bondage of its ancestors.
Listen to what Jesus said regarding children (Message paraphrase), “What’s more, when you receive the childlike on my account, it’s the same as receiving me… But if you give them a hard time, bullying or taking advantage of their simple trust, you’ll wish you hadn’t. You’d be better off dropped in the middle of the lake with a millstone around your neck. Doom to the world for giving these God-believing children a hard time! Hard times are inevitable, but you don’t have to make it worse – and it’s doomsday to you if you do.” Matthew 18
As we are in Swaziland with the children here, I pray that wherever you are that you will also serve the Lord by serving the least of these ~ whether that be as a teacher in school, as a nurse in the children’s hospital ward, or a mom nursing her newborn baby ~ serve them with gladness and humility; for when you do, you serve the Lord Jesus Himself.
Shine On!!!
